Christmas means many things to different people, for some it’s a time of joy, rest, re-connection with loved ones, blessings. For some it’s a time of extra stress, pressure, financial worries and over indulgence. For most of us it’s a mixture between the two!! Many people find that internal and external struggles and conflict come to the fore at this time. Often carefully followed routines are thrown into disarray as we find ourselves in unfamiliar settings or having to work extra-long hours. No matter where you find yourself this holiday season here are a few short tips and techniques you can try to ensure you remain connected with yourself.
• Make time just for you every day. This might seem like an obvious one but when you have a lot of responsibilities or are extremely busy it can be incredibly difficult to set aside even 10 minutes for yourself. Most of us will give our time, energy and attention until we are completely exhausted, particularly at Christmas time, you deserve you time! Regardless of what is going on try and plan some time just for you! You’d be surprised at the difference 10 minutes will make to your overall general well-being particularly if you’re using it for self-healing like meditation or yoga.
• Breathe! Yes that right breathe, when you feel your stress levels are starting to rise and things just aren’t going right for you give yourself a few minutes and take slow deep breaths. A technique I find very good is to imagine a colour that I associate with feeling calm like deep blue for example. Imagine yourself breathing this calming colour down into your body and slowly and deeply allow yourself to exhaling the source of the stress or tension. Do this for a few minutes and you may notice that your body starts to physically relax.
• Get some fresh air. Nature is a great healer and fresh air can literally help to clear the air between you and any issues or tension that has arisen within or around you. If you are unable or unwilling to escape by yourself then bring your partner or friend. Being out and about in nature can assist you to gain a whole new perspective on things. It gets the blood flowing and can assist you to lift any feelings of stagnation or heaviness. Often you will feel uplifted and energized as a result of being out and about.
Remember it isn’t forever. No matter how your Christmas season is going it’ll all be over soon enough. Try and remain present and grateful. I find that whatever I focus on is what I draw into my reality. Imagine the best possible scenarios for yourself and your loved ones and don’t forget to give yourself some along quality time this Christmas!!
